About Polarfront
Polarfront spent decades as a working Norwegian weather ship before her 2024 conversion into a 55.00 meters (180 feet) polar explorer yacht. Built in 1976 by Mandal Slip & m.V., with outfitting by Fitjar Mekaniske Verksted, she crewed weather station “M” in the Norwegian Sea for the Norwegian Meteorological Institute for most of her working life, making her the last operational weather ship of her kind before conversion began.
That history is still visible in her lines and in a warm, Scandinavian-retro interior that trades contemporary superyacht polish for something closer to a well-worn expedition vessel. She now carries 12 guests across 8 ensuite cabins, each individually named, including Harmattan, El Nino, Mascaret, and Sirocco. A base crew of 9 is joined by 2 dedicated polar guides, bringing total crew to 11.
Guest Accommodation
Polarfront’s 8 cabins are convertible twin or double configurations, each with its own ensuite bathroom. Her named suites, Harmattan, El Nino, Mascaret, and Sirocco among them, carry over a sense of maritime character from her working life rather than a generic luxury-yacht naming scheme.
Onboard Amenities
The Coriolis Lounge is Polarfront’s main social and lecture space, fitted with reindeer-hide throws and polar-themed furnishings that suit her Arctic and sub-Arctic cruising grounds. An onboard library focused on polar and maritime subjects gives guests something to read between landings, and generous open deck space supports wildlife viewing and photography in a way few charter yachts are built for.
Cruising Performance
Her 2024 refit replaced conventional propulsion with a hybrid-electric system built around two electric propulsion motors, cutting fuel use and emissions by more than 40 percent compared to her pre-refit specification. Cruising speed is 8 knots, with a top speed of 10 knots. That pace suits expedition yacht itineraries built around wildlife and ice navigation rather than covering long distances quickly.
