About Silver Spray
Most yachts in the Western Mediterranean charter fleet were built for this life from the keel up. Silver Spray was not. She started out in 1916 as a working pilot schooner on the Dutch coast, guiding ships into Rotterdam’s approaches, and it took eight decades, two world wars, and a stint chasing whales in the Arctic before she became the eight-guest charter yacht sailing out of the French and Italian Rivieras today.
A Pilot Schooner’s Century at Sea
Scheepswerf Piet Smit built Silver Spray in Rotterdam in 1916 as one of the Dutch North Sea pilot schooners, vessels tasked with guiding merchant ships safely through the shallow, shifting channels off the Dutch coast during the First World War. When faster motor pilot boats made her obsolete in the late 1920s, a Faroese fisherman bought her and sent her north into Arctic waters as a whaling and fishing vessel, work she continued through the Second World War.
She passed through several more owners before returning to Holland, where a full rebuild between 1995 and 1999 converted her into a luxury sailing yacht. A further refit in 2015 marked her hundredth year afloat, and she was refreshed again in 2017. Under sail she cruises comfortably at around 10 knots and can reach 15 knots with the right wind.
Guest Accommodation
At 33.5 meters (109’11”), Silver Spray sleeps up to 8 guests across 4 cabins: a master suite and three further double cabins, four beds in total between one queen and three doubles. Gaastmeer Ship and Yacht Design handled the interior, pairing the schooner’s period lines with a warm, traditional finish rather than a stripped-back contemporary look.
Below decks, the joinery and layout still read as a yacht with a working past rather than a purpose-built showpiece. Four crew members handle deck work, service and galley duties throughout the charter, a compact team suited to a yacht of this size.
Onboard Amenities
Water toys aboard include waterskis, wakeboards, fishing equipment, snorkeling gear, and a Williams jet tender for shore runs and quieter anchorages away from the main harbors.
