About Raja Laut
Raja Laut is a 30.8 meter (101’8″) wooden sailing schooner built by Georges E.K. Carraz in Labuan, Malaysia, and delivered in 2005. Naval architecture and rig design came from Bosgraaf Yacht Design in Amsterdam, working from lines drawn up in the tradition of 19th century European and American trading schooners. She sleeps up to 12 guests across 6 cabins with a crew of 7, and charters across remote South East Asia cruising grounds with a gaff-rigged two-masted profile that makes her one of the largest classic-style sailing yachts working in the region today.
A Traditional Schooner Named for the King of the Sea
The name Raja Laut is Malay for “King of the Sea,” a nod to the maritime adventure fiction of Joseph Conrad, whose stories of trade and exploration through the Malay Archipelago still color how the region is described today. Her hull is built from ulin, a dense tropical ironwood native to the region prized for its strength and natural resistance to rot, with decking in Burmese teak and deckhouses finished in yellow balau.
That construction gives Raja Laut a heft and character that fiberglass gulet tonnage rarely matches. Her profile under full sail even caught the attention of filmmakers: she was hired as a set piece for a production centered on the WWI-era raider SMS Emden. Charter guests see the same craftsmanship the film crew did, from the varnished timber joinery below deck to the traditional rigging above.
Guest Accommodation
Raja Laut accommodates up to 12 guests across 6 cabins on the lower deck: three double cabins with queen-size beds and three twin cabins with bunk berths, each fitted with a closet, table and mirror, finished in varnished timber and woven wall panelling with Southeast Asian decorative touches throughout. Headroom runs from 2.05m to 2.15m depending on the cabin, generous for a wooden schooner of this era.
Each cabin includes an en-suite bathroom with shower and air conditioning, a practical addition on a wooden-hulled yacht that keeps the traditional joinery from feeling closed in during the tropical heat. The layout suits families and small groups equally well, since cabins can be booked individually or the whole yacht taken as a private charter.
Onboard Amenities
Indoor living centers on a teak-panelled saloon below deck with deep U-shaped sofa seating around a central coffee table, carved wood detailing, and a large flatscreen television with DVD player, a comfortable retreat from the sun during the middle of the day. Air conditioning runs throughout the interior, and Wi-Fi keeps guests connected even well away from shore.
On deck, guests find open lounging and dining areas shaded by traditional canvas awnings, ideal for meals while at anchor. Water toys and snorkeling equipment are carried aboard for reef stops and beach days, and the crew arranges diving for certified guests at destinations along the itinerary.
