About Augustine Phinisi
Augustine Phinisi is a 32m traditional Indonesian gulet, the two-masted wooden schooner style long associated with the boatbuilders of Tanah Beru in South Sulawesi. Built in 2020 from ironwood and teak, she is named for the owning family’s grandmother, a detail that reflects her genuinely family-run operation rather than a corporate charter brand.
She cruises year-round from Labuan Bajo into Komodo National Park, a region known for its dragons, pink-sand beaches and manta ray snorkelling. Augustine Phinisi is built around family charter groups rather than a dive-liveaboard product, with two distinct ways to book her.
Guest Accommodation
Booked as an exclusive private charter, Augustine Phinisi accommodates a more intimate 8 to 10 guests across her four VIP suites, each with its own bathroom and large windows. On select departures she also runs as a small-group shared-cabin cruise for up to 15 guests, a different product with its own per-person pricing rather than a simple weekly rate.
The four suites are arranged with multi-generational groups in mind and avoid the tighter, dive-first layout typical of many Komodo liveaboards. A crew of eight looks after guests throughout the voyage.
Onboard Amenities
Guests have a jacuzzi, air-conditioned indoor dining area and two outdoor lounges to move between depending on the time of day. Large windows run the length of the suites and keep them bright, a detail typical of a boat built for families rather than a bare-bones dive-support fit-out.
Air Conditioning
Jacuzzi
Karaoke
Entertainment runs to a karaoke system and large smart TVs, while the onboard programme and menus are planned around multi-generational groups rather than a single type of guest.
Cruising Performance
Augustine Phinisi carries a single Mitsubishi engine that gives her a cruising speed of around 7 knots and a top speed of 8 knots, typical for a phinisi built mainly for coastal and island-hopping cruising under power rather than sail.
Her home waters are Komodo National Park and the islands around Labuan Bajo, a distinctive charter ground within Southeast Asia. Longer voyages extend to Sumbawa, and a separate shorter itinerary covers the Selayar islands further north.
Toys & Water Equipment
Water toys on board include kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and a floating trampoline, along with snorkelling gear for exploring Komodo’s reefs. The set is built around leisure and family activities rather than dedicated dive support, though guests can still find excellent independent diving and snorkelling in the surrounding waters.
